I know it isn't easy to tab thats why you get 20 points :-P

If you do the work and it is a different version I would say post it anyway. I know there have been times when I have combined versions of two tabs into one tab that I thought sounded better.

Nick
My question is, I've noticed on some tabs that there might be a note missing, or a note tabbed wrong, in this case should you retab it as a new version?

Good point, Tom. I've also noticed they'll be no author when I know either who wrote the song or who performed it--it would be kind of nice if subtle mistakes or omissions like that could be corrected without adding an entire new tab... not sure how that would be done unless there was someway to contact the original poster (it would be opening up a can of worms and then some to let each other edit one another's tabs).

Like I said, I don't use Midi files and my ear sucks, so I usually ransack the public library for sheet music and tab from there. If I really like a song, I'll buy a copy from musicnotes.com for $4 or $5, but I've only done that twice--you can go on the site and see the first page of the song for free which may help you get started with the melody (I've double-checked some of my tabs this way to see if my ear really sucks as bad as I think it does... mostly, it does).

Just to prevent people from being offended I would either leave it or post a version 2

In regards to tab artists I have the policy of leaving them as unknown, since I don't know if they used another version of the song by a different artist.

Yea maybe forget the song tabbing thing, it is really hard. I'd say just do like a drawing for anyone who gets like 20 points in a month or something.

one new thing you might add would be a primer on tabbing. i bet a lot of folks aren't really sure where to get started or might be intimidated. it could be as simple as a tip sheet page or something. this isn't something that would increase traffic, but it might increase the number of people who attempt to tab songs. just talking to you guys in that one thread about how all my tabs were mis-aligned was extremely helpful to me, not to mention several of you dispelling the myth i'd created inside my head that you all simply listen to music and tab from your ear alone. it's great to see new members tabbing right away like you, kyle!

I don't have the time to write up something but if someone writes up something I will be more then happy to display (like the tab rulers).

Nick,
I probably don't have the experience to write the whole thing myself, but I could give it a good start and I would be glad to compile tips from others. Would it make sense for me to start a new thread inviting people to submit tips on tabbing?

I think we need a "any" option in the difficulty slider at the search a tab function. Now I have to search for the song three times to make sure it isn't posted.

I've noticed that also. How would you determine if a song is beginner, intermediate or expert? Just because one person thinks the song is easy, another person may not think so because of bends or difficult note riffs.

Lately, the songs I've been posting, should have been classified as intermediate because of bends but I just leave them as beginners. Anyone trying to play a song will know their playing own ability for any song. It's not like an intermediate or expert song can be tabbed down to a beginner tab.

If a person can't play that tab, they'll have to practice more to improve their playing ability.

Technically if you keep it on beginner it will actually search all of them. The problem with any is that the listing is generated once and the entire site draws from that one listing. This would mean if I add an any in the search people would also be able to add a song with a difficult of any as well. You can also use the search at the top of every page to search the website for songs.

When I orginally put the site together the difficulty level seemed important, now though I think it might just be useless.

Yeah, I think you could probably scrap the difficulty rating entirely.

It wouldn't be hard for me to scrap it if people don't think it make sense.

I agree that the difficulty should be eliminated. I don't really think think it really applies much anymore, what with there being so many songs and everyone's skills levels different.

I see people talking about problems with tabs, (missing notes etc).

Why not send then a (NICE) note and discuss it with them.

If they like your suggestion, perhaps they will update their tab to correct it.

Just make sure the notes are nice because people have been offended in the past with some of the ways people have told them that their tabs are wrong. That is one of the reasons we have the messaging system.

I think it would be great if we could rate tabs and leave comments to them like on www.ultimate-guitar.com for example. I know that some people don't like people to comment their tabs but that is easily solved by making an option to disable comments like on youtube for example.

I think this would make a lot of people more motivated to post tabs, it makes posting tabs more fun.
