I was listening to some blues song on one of the Shoutcast blues stations today. I can't even remember what the song was. There was a simple riff like 4 -5 5 4. I just started matching the rhythm then when the song went into a chorus I just improvised and played along.
Was I on key? I have no idea.
Was I playing the correct notes? Probably not.
Would it have sounded good to someone else listening? Maybe but I doubt it.
Did it feel right? Hell yah! It felt great and that's what matters the most.
Stephen: I think you describe what we as harp players are really about. The sounds we make with our "mississippi sax" when we do it right, just make us FEEL GOOD. Bye the way, since it "felt right" and it would not have "felt right" unless it sounded right to you, it almost certainly was in Key. Since it sounded good to you thats a good clue to sounding good to other people.
