BIRTH OF THE BLUES
W: B.G. DeSylva & Lew Brown
M: Ray Henderson

They heard the breeze
-3 -2* -2 2
in the trees sing-ing weird mel-o-dies
-3 3 -2 -4 -3 3 4 -4 -3
And they made that the start of the blues
-5 4 -4 -4 -4 -4 4 -5 4
And from a jail came the wail
3 -2* -2 2 -3 3 -2
of a down-heart-ed frail
-4-3 3 4 -4 -3
And they played that as part of the blues
-5 4 -4 -4 -4 -4 4 -5 4
From a whip-poor-will out on a hill
-4 4 -5 -5* 6 -5 -4 -5 -4
they took a new note
-5 -4 -5 -4 -4
Pushed it through a horn
-4 4 -5 -5* 6
till it was worn in-to a blue note
5* -3 4* -3 4* -3 4* -3 -3
And then they nursed it re-hearsed it
3 -2* -2 2 -3 3 -2 -4
and gave out the news
-3 3 4 -4 -3
That the south-land
-5 4 -4 -4
gave birth to the blues
-4 -4 4 -5 4
