Four and twen-ty years ago I come in-to this life
3* -4 -4 4* 4* -4 -4 -4 3* -2* 2 -2* 3*
The son of a wo-man and a man who lived in strife
3* 2 3 2 2 2 2
He was tired of be-ing poor
2 2 3 3 -3 -4 -3 3* -1 2 2
And he was-n’t in-to sell-ing door to door
  2 2 3 -3 -4 -3 3 -1 2 2
And he worked like the de-vil to be more

-4 -4 -4 -4 4* 4* -4 -4 3* -2* 2 -2* 3*
A dif-frent kind of pov-er-ty now up-sets me so
-4 -4 4* 4* -4 -4 -4 3* -2* 2
Night aft-er sleep-less night I walk the floor
2 3* -2* 2 2 3 2 2 3 2 2
And I want to know, why am I so a-lone?
  2 3 -3 -4 -3 3 -1 2 2 2
Where is my wo-man? Can I bring her home?
  2 2 3 3 -3 -4 -3 -1 2 2
Have I dri-ven her a-way? Is she gone?

-4 -4 -4 4* 4* -4 -4 -4 3* -2* 2 -2* 3*
Morn-ing comes to sun-rise and I’m driv-en to my bed
3* -4 -4 -4 4* 4* -4 -4 -4 3* -2* 2 -2* 3*
I see that it is emp-ty and there’s dev-ils in my head
3* 2 3 2 2 2 3 2 2
I em-brace the man-y col-ored beast
2 2 3 3 -3 -4 -3 3 3 -1 2 2 2
I grow wear-y of the tor-ment, can there be no peace
2 2 3 3 -3 -4 -3 3 -1 2 2
An I find my-self just wish-ing that my life
  2 2 2 2
Would sim-ply cease
