It's four in the morning,
-3 5 -4 -3 5 -4
the end of December
5 5 5 5 5
I'm writing you now
-4 -3 -4 -4 -4 5 -4
Just to see if you're better
5 5 5 5
New York is cold,
-3 -3 5 5 5 5 -4
But I like where I'm living
-3 5 5 5 5 -4 -3
There's music on Clinton Street
-4 -4 -4 5 -4
All through the evening.
5 5 -5 6 -5 -5 -6
I hear that you're building your
-6 -6 6 6 6 6 -5 -5
Little house deep in the desert
5 5 5 5 -4 -4 -4
You're living for nothing now,
-4 -4 -4 5 5 5 5 5 -4 -4
I hope you're keeping some kind of record.
-3 4 4 6 6 6
Ye-s, and Jane came by
-6 7 7 -6 6 -5
With a lock of your hair
-5 -5 6 -6 -6 6 -5 5
She said that you gave it to her
5 5 -5 6 6 -5 5 -4
That night that you planned to go clear
-3 -4 5 -4 -3 -4
Did you ev-----er go clear?
-4 5 -4 -3 5 -4
The last time we saw you
-3 5 -4 -3 5 -4
You looked so much older
5 5 5 5 5 -4
Your famous blue raincoat
-3 -4 -4 -4 5 -4
Was torn at the shoulder
5 5 5 5 -3 -3
You'd been to the station
5 5 5 5 -4
To meet every train
-3 5 5 -4
And you came home
-3 -4 -4 -4 5 -4
Without Li-li Marlene
5 5 5 -5 6 -5 -5
And you treated my woman
-6 -6 6 6 6 -5
To a flake of your life
-4 -4 -4 5 5
And when she came back
5 5 5 -4 -4 -4
She was nobody's wife.
-3 4 6 6 6
Well I see you there
-6 7 7 -6 6 -5
With the rose in your teeth
-5 6 -6 6 -5 5
One more thin gypsy thief
5 -5 6 -5 5 -4
Well I see Jane's awake --
-4 5 -4 -3 -4
She sends her regards.-4 5 -4 -3 5 -4
And what can I tell you
-3 5 -4 -3 5 -4
My brother, my killer
5 5 5 5 5 -4 -4
What can I possibly say?
-3 -4 -4 -4 5 -4
I guess that I miss you,
5 5 5 5 5 5
I guess I forgive you
-3 -3 5 5 5 5 -4
I'm glad you stood in my way.
-3 5 5 5 5 -4 -3
If you ever come by here,
-4 -4 -4 5 -4
for Jane or for me
5 5 -5 6 -5 -5 -5 -5
Well your en-e-my is sleeping,
6 6 6 6 -5 -5
And his woman is free.
-3 4 4 6 6 6 -6
Yes, and thanks, for the trouble
7 7 -6 6 -5
You took from her eyes
-5 -5 6 -6 -6 6 -5
I thought it was there for good
5 6 -5 5 -4
So I never tried.
4 6 6 6 -6 7 7 -6 6 -5
And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
-5 -5 6 -6 -6 6 -5 5
She said that you gave it to her
5 5 -5 6 6 -5 5 -4
That night that you planned to go clear --
5 5 -4 -3 -4 -4
Sincerely, L. Cohen
