Song:

One Step Beyond (based on the original Madness version)

This tab is based on my versions, available at www.youtube.com/watch?v=izWWZnNY48Y and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GyISgkexFc

This uses a diatonic HARMONIC MINOR harmonica (C minor), but I play it solo in Bb harmonica minor

Notation: 3=blow, -3=draw, -3’= draw single bend, -3”= draw double bend, -3”’= draw triple bend

There is something in this tab for all abilities. The main verse can be played with no bends at all, whereas the solo is quite intricate, especially the timing. Enjoy!

Main verse

1  2  3    -2” 2 -2” 2  1

1  2  3    -2” 2 -2” 2  1

1  2  3    -2” 2 -2” 2 -2” 2  1

3 -3 -4    -4  5 -4  5 -4  6 -4

Main verse – next octave up (possibly easier to play to start with as there are no bends)

4  5  6    -5  5 -5  5  4

4  5  6    -5  5 -5  5  4

4  5  6    -5  5 -5  5 -5  5  4

6 -7 -8    -8  8 -8  8 -8  9 -8

…and the top octave

7  8  9    -9  8 -9  8  7

7  8  9    -9  8 -9  8  7

7  8  9    -9  8 -9  8 -9  8  7

6 -7 -8    -8  8 -8  8 -8  9 -8

Now for the solos…

Solo #1

4  5  6    -5  5 -5  5  4

  -5 -5  5 -5  5  4

  -5 -5  5 -5  5  4

4 -4  5 -5  6  7  6

6  6 -5  6 -5  6 -5  6 -5  5  4  4  4  4

3  3  3 -2” 3  3 -2” 3 -2” 3 -2”

3  3  3 -3’ 4 -3’ 4 -3’ 4 -3’ 4 -3’ 4 -3’ 4 4

Solo #2

3 -3’-3’ 3 -3’-3’ 3 -3’ 3 -3’ 3 -3’ 3 -3’ 3

-3’ 3 -2” 3 -2” 2 -2” 2 -1  2 -1  1 -4  4  3

-3’ -3’ -3’ -3’ -2 -1

-1 -2” -1 -2” -1 -2” -2 -2” -2 -2 -4

Then back to a verse or two, and the ending:

1  2  3    -3”’ 3 -3”’ 3  2  1

-2” -2” 2 -2” 2  1  1

2  1  2 -2” 4  4

5  4  5 -5  7--------(hold and blow bend down slightly)

7  6  5  4  3  2 -3’----(hold)

You can always throw in some tongue-blocked vamping and octaves
