Hopefully these are not already in place and I have missed them , if so apols.
as a mod on another ( unrelated site ) I would suggest a "New Posts" button on the forum home page...so members can simply see what has been posted since their last visit.
an option so that hovering over the topic on the forum list allows a pop-up of the first 2 or 3 lines of text , so you can read the post to see if its relevant to your interest at that time

The forum will display what is unviewed by you from last visit. As for your other request, the forum is the only part of the site which is provided third party so changes can't really be made to it.
