What in Tarnation did I just do?

There have been several tunes going through my head that i have no clue of the title. I stumbled upon one of them the other day and looked at the notes and was able to apply the score to my C diatonic. I openly admit my grasp of music theory is comparatively at toddler stage.
It looks to me it is written in B-flat and would be like 11th position.
I feel like the guy fiddling with a safe and it suddenly pops open but can't figure out what in the world I did. Is this something that i ought to be able to do with any B flat score?
