Hi All,

I was looking for more info on bending notes and here are two interesting sites I found. The first one even has moving pictures that show the air going through the mouth. It's very nicely done!

Enjoy!

On the draw bend (holes 1 thru 4, and hole 6) articulate the word "you." The lower the hole, the more you have to drop your jaw.

On the blow bend (holes 7 thru 10), shape your tongue like you're whistling a high note.

Scooping is when you hit a note bent, then quickly unbend it.

Bending your tongue bends or scoopsa notes.

What I wrote above is an abreviated version of what I wrote a few times before. So the long version one more time:

Slowly articulate the word "you" until you find that sweet spot where the note bends. Then remember where that sweet spot is so you can go directly to it when you need to. The lower the hole, etc...

Thanks for the bending tips. I'm just atarting out on the harmonica and the low notes are giving me trouble. It seems to be a bit easier on my F or D Harmonica than it is on the G or C.

hi guys i have a book called "bending the blueson harmonica "by david harp, it is very easy to follow and some great exercises. i got it from ebay cheap. the only concern i have is that after following his exercises and tips it all seems to work too easy, i seem to be bending the notes almost straight away, especially as i still am a beginner, i have only been playing since april this year. so either i have a natural talent for bending or im not bending like think i am. lol

What makes bending "difficult" is that it is different from the way you learn to get good tone. Kudos to you for getting it early in the process.

If you want to check if you do indeed have it right (and I'd bet you do) somewhere out on the world wide web are sites with sound files demonstrating bent notes. Barring that, try playing the following scale:
1 -1 2 -2b -2 -3b -3 4

Keep harpin!

Hey soulrude, I thought I was bending as soon as I picked up a harmonica. Turns out, I was only getting expression by saying yow or wow. I bought a Korg CA-30 chromatic tuner. It is great to see if you are actually bending notes, and how far. It cost $20 but has been a very valuable tool. You can use it to tune any instrument using the 1/4" input jack or the built in microphone.

Hello !
I'm a beginner and I would like to ask you what is the difference between full bending and simple one. Thank you very much.

A note can be bent a half step or a full step on the draw 2 and blow 10.
A note can be bent a half step, a full step or 1 1/2 steps on the draw 3.
A note can only be bent a half step on draw 1, draw 4, draw 6, blow 8 and blow 9.
The draw 5 can only be bent 1/4 step.

A half step is a move to the next note on the chromatic scale, from D to Db, for example. Since there is no B#/Cb, a move from B to C is a half step. Also there is no E#/Fb, so a move from E to F is a half step.

Hee guys,

here are some of my experiences with bending and some tips.

I used to have problems with bending too, until i saw this video:

It is about just making a good single note. You need to get this right
in order to bend is my experience.

This is a link to a website about overblows, but the part about the H-spot is
also really important for the draw bends. you got to use the back part of your
tongue to make the bend.

good luck!
